Mammoth Woolly Sweaters Cris Nikolov, James Connolly, Jim Flynn, Phil Godsell and Shireen Mohandes. I Can See Clearly Now (1972, Johnny Nash). It is a common misconception that this song was written and/or performed by Bob Marley, possibly because The Wailers were the backing band on Nash's original recording. Marley wrote Nash's next single, "Stir It Up." Hi Ho Silver Lining (1967, Scott English and Larry Weiss). This was first released as a single in March 1967 by “The Attack” and a few days later by Jeff Beck. Beck did not like the song and hates the idea that it is what he is most remembered for. It did not make it onto his first solo album. At different times Jeff Beck declined opportunities to join both the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd; Ronnie Wood and David Gilmour got the jobs instead. In an article in The Independent on Sunday (December 2002) , David Lister talks about a medical condition called "Glam Rock Shoulder” (medical term for which is “capsulitis”). No less an authority than the British Medical Association said this week that the condition is caused by middle-aged partygoers punching an arm in the air in time to their favourite old songs. One of the most common causes is apparently Jeff Beck's “Hi Ho Silver Lining”. Far be it from me to argue about medical conditions with the BMA, but “Hi Ho Silver Lining” was released in 1967, a good three years before glam rock; so the condition is really “Over-excited Hippie Shoulder”. |
